ABS injection molding typical application range:
- Automotive (dashboard, tools, doors, wheel covers, mirror boxes, etc.),
- high-intensity tools (hair dryer, blender, food processing machines, lawn mowers, etc.), telephone housings, typewriter
- recreational vehicles such as golf trolleys and jet sled vehicles, and the other.
- ABS materials are hygroscopic and require to be dried before injection molding processing,
- Recommended drying conditions is 80-90 ℃ for at least 2 hours drying. Melting temperature of 210-280 ℃, recommended temperature: 245 ℃
Mold temperature 25-70 ℃;
- (Injection mold temperature will affect the plastic parts finish, lower temperatures cause the finish to low).
Injection molding pressure is 500-1000 bar.
Injection molding speed: medium and high speed.

Shrinkage from 2% to 6%, generally we used 5% for ABS plastic formanufacturing.

ABS is quite good material for painting, plate and texture. Sure, it is also good to use laser cutting to make icon or text.
ABS can be transparent color too.
ABS injection molding plastic grade:
To meet different appliance and performance, ABS pallets manufacturer manufacture different grade ABS plastics named them.

ABS is the synthesis of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene monomers. Each of the monomers with different characteristics;
Acrylonitrile have high strength, thermal stability and chemical stability; Butadiene have tenacity and impact resistance;
Styrene have easy processing, high gloss, and high strength.
From the morphological point of view, ABS is non-crystalline materials. Polymerization of the monomers to produce a two-phase terpolymer, a styrene – acrylonitrile continuous phase, and the other is a polybutadiene rubber dispersed phase.
The properties of ABS depends on the ratios of the monomers and the molecular structure of the two phases.
This allows great flexibility in product design, and the resulting market hundreds of different quality ABS material.
These different quality materials to provide different characteristics,
for example, with a moderate to high impact, from low to high finish and high heat distortion characteristics.
ABS offers superior ease of processing, visual characteristics, low creep and excellent dimensional stability and high impact strength.
ABS injection molding cost,
You need to make the injection mold before ABS injection molding, so the ABS injection molding cost include the injection mold cost, also there is cost as below:
- Resin cost,
- Injection molding labor cost,
- Injection molding machine cost,
Resin cost is easy to understand, it is the cost to buy ABS resin for injection.
Most of injection molding manufacturers combine the injection molding labor cost and injection molding machine cost to calculate the injection cost. But if your products with complex structure, manufacturers may charge you risky cost. So this is the reason why the experience injection manufactures with price advantage.
What steel should be use for core and cavity for ABS?
- 718(h), 738(h),
S7 from ASSAB of Sweden or Finkl,
- NAK55 and NAK80 from DAIDO of Japan,
- P20(FINKL ), P20HH(FINKL), DRX(FINKL),
- 2311, 2312,
- 2767 etc.
Reasonable soution for abs injection molding mold manufacturing:
If you leave mold in China for production and mold lifew lower than 300,000 shots, you could choose China local P20 for core and cavity,
even if it is more than 300,000 shots and leave mold in SEASKYTOOLING, you could choose local P20 as SEASKYTOOLING guarantee the mold life.
For export mold,
if you mold life is more than 300,000 shots, you could chooseH13 through harden steel fore core and cavity.
If it is mold life is lower, you could choose LKM 738H or LKM 738 for core and cavity,
Then you can get reasonable mold price and qualified mold.
If it is large mold, size longer than 1 meter.
You could choose high hard P20 from Baosteel and consolidate core and cavity in A,B plate.
This steel is widely used for largeinjection mold manufacturing.
Please note most of steel have no available large mold steel, if you did not choose the right mold steel, your vendor could change the steel or wait a longer time to wait or search steel.
If you just need to have from 1 to 5 pice for ABS plastic parts, you can use CNC machining to manufacture ABS plastic parts prototype. If you accept similar material, then the SLA and casting process will be okay for ABS plastic prototype.
Generally you will choose SLA process if you need 1 piece only, SLA prototype manufacturing process is more expensive than CNC machining and Casting generally.
Sometime the simple ABS and POM plastic parts will be cheaper by using CNC machining.
Now FDM printing should be one of cost saving process if you do not mind the surface is raugh. You can choose lots of color once you are going to use FDM printing process.
